My best friend drove me to Leavenworth a small Bavarian town in Washington. She was excited to take me there to experience the feel of the place as it was different. On our way up the mountains I noticed how rain started transforming into snow. The surroundings were filled with lots and lots of evergreen pine trees topped with white snow. As we drove closer to our destination point, snow became more evident. The road was quite icy. I believe we were driving at a fair speed. As we were on a mountain, imagine the right side of the road was like a cliff falling towards the evergreen trees and to the left of the road were blocks of snow covering the island which was there to separate the other half of the road heading the opposite direction. I noticed loads of trucks parking on the side to change tires. We were chatting until suddenly our car drove over frozen ice. For the first time in my life I felt like I was in the movies. During that time I ran out of words. I was just silent watching how the car started sliding and partly spinning from left to right. Honestly at that point, I thought we were gonna die. My life at that point depended on my best friend. I was trying to tell her to break but that moment words just escaped me. I listened to her voice as she tried to maneuver the steering wheel clockwise then counter clockwise several times. This caused us to skid back and forth. Basically the car went out of control. She decided to step on the break which fortunately put us at a halt. It all happened so fast. It was scary. Words both escaped us further. I just whispered to her after: Are you ok? She said she was fine. I asked her: Was this a first time? She said: Yes. That moment I said a prayer thanking the Lord for being with us during that frightful encounter. Anything could have happened I thought. A slight change could have changed the whole dynamics. I could have screamed and she might have gotten more distracted. She could have forgotten to step on break and that was the end of it. I wanted to pull the hand break I recall, but I was paralyzed at that point. We decided to head back home as we didn't want to get stranded. We did joke afterwards, good thing we didn't die today there's still a lot of things we both want to do in life. Then reality hit me that one can never tell when the last day is for any individual. Thus I was reminded to live life. Well, we sure were. I share this story not to trigger fear but to create awareness to keep safe during the inevitable winters!
